Understanding the stages of change:
The Transtheoretical Model

The Transtheoretical Model (TTM), or Stages of Change model, explains how people change behaviors over time. It includes six stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and sometimes termination. Change is seen as a cycle, not a straight line—relapses can happen. The model highlights the importance of readiness, confidence, and weighing pros and cons, making it useful in areas like addiction recovery and mental health.

Having something to aim for—like personal growth, stability, or a healthy future—gives direction and meaning when building a support system, finding friends, or dating. It helps you choose relationships that align with your values, set boundaries, and stay focused on what truly matters. Clear goals act as a compass, guiding you toward connections that support your well-being rather than distract from it.

The 12 Steps of Recovery: Breaking it down street level
